Inventor gifts
--------------

IRIS Inventor is an object-oriented 3-D toolkit offering a
comprehensive solution to interactive graphics programming problems.
It presents a programming model based on a 3-D scene database that
dramatically simplifies graphics programming. It includes a rich set
of objects such as cubes, polygons, text, materials, cameras, lights,
trackballs, handle boxes, 3-D viewers, and editors that speed up your
programming time and extend your 3-D programming capabilities.

IRIS Inventor:
. introduces a simple event model for 3-D interaction
. defines a standard file format for 3-D data interchange
. provides high performance object picking
. is window system and platform independent
    . supports PostScript printing
. encourages programmers to create new customized objects
    . is fun to use

The Inventor development option is an extra-cost option that can be
ordered from Silicon Graphics, and allows a programmer to create
Inventor applications.

This directory contains additional documentation, models, and
programming tools for IRIS Inventor developers and users. To unpack a
"tar.Z" file, use the following command:

zcat models.tar.Z | tar xvf -

(replace "models.tar.Z" with the appopriate filename).

Data files
----------

models.tar.Z contains a few 3D objects in the Inventor 3D
interchange format.  You can use the SceneViewer program to view them;
SceneViewer is a sample Inventor application that is part of IRIX
4.0.1 and later (it is installed as /usr/sbin/SceneViewer). However,
to save disk space, SceneViewer is not installed by default. You must
manually select the 'inventor_eoe.demo.inventor' software subsystem to
have it installed. You may also want to install the
'inventor_eoe.data.inventor' subsystem to install more 3D objects
(they are installed into the /usr/data/models/ directory). See the
manual page for the 'inst' command or the IRIS installation guide
document for more information on installing software.

Documents
---------

doc.tar.Z contains three new documents about Inventor. The first is a
document describing how to write file converters that convert from
other 3D file formats to the Inventor 3D interchange format and vice
versa. The second is a quick-reference guide to all of the standard
Inventor objects. The third is a set of performance tuning tips for
IRIS Inventor programs. They are all pre-formatted PostScript documents
that can be viewed with xpsview, ghostview, or can be printed on any
PostScript printer.

DxfToIv
-------

DxfToIv is a utility that converts AutoCAD's "DXF" format files
to Inventor files. DxfToIv.tar.Z contains the converter and
a man page.
