Index of /SGI/ftp.sgi.com/sgi/roboinst/examples/

These directories contain examples of RoboInst control scripts. They
are support material for the online book.

The base directory is not itself an example configuration, but
contains files common to many of the example configurations.
Symbolic links are used to avoid duplication of files.

The examples included are:

======== update    ========
  This will perform a "standard" upgrade from IRIX-5.3 or later to
  IRIX-6.5. As this will only select for upgrade existing (and superseding)
  products, it is safe to over-specify the source CD-image directories.
  Over-specifying directories will take slightly longer to read the
  un-needed ones, but will not not affect overall installation time very
  much, as it is dominated by the time to copy over the network.

======== developer ========
  Clean install a development machine: compilers, docs, everything.
  Shows partitioning as a function of memory size.

======== user      ========
  For finer control over subsystems to install, use a selections file.
  Also shows how to handle the oddball O2/R10k system disk
  Shows one way to configure a network printer from the miniroot.

======== copy      ========
  An example showing the "proper" way to fast copy filesystems from
   a master "golden" disk.
  Also showing how to do everything just in the mrconfig file.

======== minimum   ========
  Install a minimum system, and get it back up ASAP.
  it is intended to complete the installation "live"
  Part of "ASAP" is to defer requickstart processing until the "live" time.
  Failing to requickstart affects performance but not function of the system.

======== noshare   ========
 install a basic system, but which /usr/share is NFS mounted

======== restore   ========
  Clean the system, and restore from backups.
  You may repeat the steps for additional disks
  The example shows using Networker,
   substitute other backup tools as appropriate.
  Make sure that /stand/sash is in the backup, or copy it as part of /custom
   or the resultant system may not boot

======== server    ========
  Clean install and configure a small server.
  Server admins usually prefer to split up the "root" filesystem
   for safety and manage-ability.
  Also shows partitioning based upon root disk size.

======== dd        ========
  NOTE that using dd to copy XFS filesystem is NOT recommended!
  See `man xfs` for the reasons why not.
  See the "copy" example directory for a better approach.
  But this is the fastest method to install a system.

======== 2nd-disk  ========
  This is to create a minimal system on a second disk (not the
  normal boot system disk), for fast load and reboot. It also
  demonstrates custom disk partitioning

======== alt-partition ========
  This illustrates the special procedures needed to install IRIX into
   a custom partition. This is NOT recommended for normal use!
  It is STRONGLY recommended to always put root on partition 0 and swap
   on partition 1, but sometimes you have to break the rules...

======== new62    ========
  New to RoboInst 1.1 and the 6.5.2 miniroot (installation tools) is the
   ability to install older OS versions (6.2, 6.3 and 6.4).
  This is an example of clean installing an IRIX 6.2 system.
  A selections file based upon an existing system would probably be
   a better choice in the long run.
  NOTE: Since the 6.5 miniroot is used to create this system, the 6.x (x<5)
   kernel will not be able to mount the filesystem unless the appropriate
   patch (or its successor) is installed at the same time:
	3289 XFS rollup #14 for IRIX 6.2
	3290 XFS rollup #7 for IRIX 6.3
	3291 XFS rollup #11 for IRIX 6.4
   These patches also have prereq patches that are also needed.
  You must install roboinst.sw.client (v1.1 or later) last for a recent
   sash so that the system is bootable.

======== new63    ========
  This is an example of clean installing an IRIX 6.3 (O2) system.
  See the notes for new62 above.

======== new64    ========
  This is an example of clean installing an IRIX 6.4 (Octane) system.
  See the notes for new62 above.
